Fulfilled Dreams
Landon’s elk hunt at the N Bar was one of those experiences that grounded everyone involved and reminded us exactly why Outdoor Dreams exists.
Landon is a 14-year-old from Arkansas who lives and breathes the outdoors. Hunting and fishing are not just passions for him, they are part of his family’s way of life. The deer they harvest on their property and neighboring land quite literally help feed their family because buying meat at the store is often out of reach financially.
But Landon’s story goes far beyond financial hardship.
At just eight years old, Landon underwent surgery to remove three brain tumors, including one on his spinal cord that impacted his vision. More recently, after a fall that resulted in a broken tailbone, imaging revealed no cartilage in his knees as well as concerning black spots in his bone marrow. Doctors are still working to determine what those findings mean, and the uncertainty has been heavy on their family. Later this month, Landon is scheduled for knee surgery that will leave him wheelchair bound for several weeks during recovery.
Despite all of that, Landon showed up to Montana with excitement that you could feel from the moment he stepped out in the snow. Joining him on this hunt were both of his parents, which made the experience even more meaningful. This wasn’t just about filling a tag, it was about time together away from hospitals, scans, and fear.
Late-season elk hunting is never easy, and this hunt was no exception.
As guide Josh shared, the elk had been worked over pretty hard since the beginning of the shoulder season, and throughout that first morning the only animals showing themselves were bulls. As the hours passed, it was starting to feel doubtful. Earlier that morning, before the hunt really got going, they did catch a break when they spotted a moose. It was a first for Landon and his family and a pretty special moment in itself. Eventually, they located a good-sized herd bunched up and bedded down in a pocket below them.
They made their move, working their way to the top of the ridge through deep snow. It wasn’t a long walk, but it left an impression. Josh remembers Landon grinning and saying over and over, “Man, I’ve never seen snow this deep.”
They eased into position, closing the distance to 370 yards. By the time they got set up, most of the herd was already on high alert, but two cows were still bedded close to where they had first laid down.
Landon was excited, understandably so. Josh had to slow the moment down, helping him settle his breathing and calm the adrenaline. Once he found his rhythm, everything changed.
When the shot opportunity came, Landon executed perfectly. The shot was true, and the cow didn’t make it 20 yards before expiring. It was clean, ethical, and a moment none of them will ever forget.
What stood out most throughout the hunt wasn’t just Landon’s toughness, but the gratitude of his entire family. His father later shared that this trip came at a time when they desperately needed relief, joy, and time together. Time away from surgeries, diagnoses, and the unknown. Time to simply watch their son be a kid again. That is exactly what this hunt provided.
We are incredibly grateful to the owners of the N Bar Ranch for continuing to open their property to Outdoor Dreams kids. Their generosity and trust make experiences like this possible, and the relationship we have built with them means more to us than we can put into words.
Thank you to guides Josh Sanofsky, Ted Allison, and Russ Smith for their patience, professionalism, and care in the field, and for helping create an environment where Landon could settle in, feel confident, and succeed.
Hunts like Landon’s are about so much more than elk. They are about hope during stressful times. They are about families finding time to breathe. And they are about reminding kids like Landon that they are seen, supported, and never fighting alone.
These moments don’t happen on their own. They happen because people step up. If you believe kids like Landon deserve experiences like this, consider donating or getting involved with Outdoor Dreams.
